EXPENSES

RV STATS (2019-TBD): (This section is a work in progress for the RV Trip.)
The number one question we've received is how on Earth are you able to do this and work?

TABLE HERE.

RTW STATS (2012-2013):
The number one question we've received and asked ourselves is how much does something like this really cost? Well, to be honest, we're still not completely sure. So, in our meager attempt to shine some light on this age old question, we made a pact with ourselves to document every morsel of money spent on this trip. From underwear to underwater diving, souvenirs to shelter, no cost is too small to add to the tally. Keep in mind, this is a grand total for both of us, so going on your own would definitely be less.

NICE TO HAVES: Not included in the above tally. These are some things that aren't necessary for a trip (except for the packs), but if you've got some gift cards on hand they're wonderful little luxuries. Some we're taking with us on our trip and some we've seen people have in their arsenal. Note: These are ballpark costs, since prices vary depending on what type you're looking for.
  • BACKPACK ($250 x2 = $500): Beats a handkerchief on a stick.
  • TREATED MOSQUITO NET ($25 x2 = $50): Chris had a teeny tiny "incident" in Guatemala that has now put this item in the MUST list for us. Worth it if you know you'll be spending ample time sleeping outside.
  • CLOTHESLINE ($8): Whether you make this out of rope or buy an official clothesline, it's super handy when all you want to do is put on a fresh pair of unmentionables, hand-washed the night before.
  • DIGITAL POCKET CAMERA ($200 x2 = $400): For those picture happy peeps.
  • GO PRO CAMERA ($150): For those video happy peeps.
  • PASSPORT-SIZED EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE ($80): A place to store all those unplanned memories, besides the ole noggin. Another option is to use online storage, like Dropbox. We may do both for added insurance.
  • E-READER ($100): Great for downloading travel books, as well as The Alchemist.
  • TABLET + KEYBOARD DOCK ($650): Mainly to be used to keep in touch with family and friends back home, ie. Internet access. We went back and forth between a NetBook and a Tablet with Keyboard Dock, but ultimately decided on the Tablet b/c it has longer battery life (with dock included) and a solid state hard drive (no moving parts), which makes it a tad less destructible. **UPDATE: NETBOOK ($280): We returned the Tablet because specific websites wouldn't work properly on the Android operating system. Now we have a much cheaper NetBook. The battery life doesn't last as long, but every webpage works perfectly. Swapped out the 2GB RAM for 4GB and might switch the hard drive to solid state.
  • GPS TRACKER ($256): On the fence on whether or not to get this. It's a very lux item.

  2. Matthew & Christine I love how you are tracking everything you have done..from what it cost before you ventured out into the world and the cost of all the things you are experiencing down the road to what you eat and so forth. What a great job budgeting your expensives and tracking your journey. I love it! I am interested in knowing if you two are going to come home and write a book of your great adventure. A book would be great. It would be a great insight to someone who wants or thinking of doing what you guys are doing...traveling to places they have never been before. Not to say Matthew is not a wonderful writer, but you Christine my angel have alway been a great writer since you were very young. You write as if we are there with you guys and want to know more. This adventure you and Matthew are on is meant to be published. So go for it! I know it would be a great book for new packpackers trying to find there way and experience what you are experiencing. I am so proud of you guys. Love, mom
